In Tebow Debate, a Clash of Faith and Football

Tim Tebow is an N.F.L. quarterback, and Tim Tebow is an outspoken Christian. And while quarterback controversies are almost as common as quarterbacks, who play perhaps the most scrutinized position in American sports, what has erupted around Tebow this season is altogether different.

At the intersection of faith and football, the fervor that surrounds both Tebow’s beliefs and his struggles in his second season for the Denver Broncos has escalated into a full-blown national debate over religion and its place in sports.

Joel Osteen Welcomes Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry to Lakewood Church (VIDEO)

Television mogul Oprah Winfrey and stage and movie producer Tyler Perry created a stir with a surprise appearance at Pastor Joel Osteen's Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, Sunday for an 11 a.m. service.

"Awesome to have you!" said Osteen, announcing their presence and welcoming the celebrities to the church. "We're so honored to have you both here, and we just celebrate and pray for you guys with what God is doing in your lives."

A Majority of Democrats Seldom or Never Go to Church, Says Gallup

A majority of Democrats—52 percent—say they seldom or never go to church, according to Gallup data published Monday.

In addition to the 52 percent of Democrats who told Gallup they seldom or never go to church, another 20 percent said they go to church nearly weekly or monthly, and 27 percent said they go weekly.

The only problem, however, was that the microphones the two men were wearing from their earlier press conference, had not in fact been turned off. What ensued was a major public embarrassment after both Obama and the French PM disparaged Netanyahu, saying they cannot “stand” dealing with him.

Osteen sat down with Colorado’s 9News anchor Lance Barry to discuss a range of topics, from gays in the church to heaven to the rapture.

"Are gays welcome at your church?" asked Barry. "They are, they are," said Osteen. "What do you tell people (about gays in church)?" said Barry.

"Well, I tell people that the church is open for anyone. It is not a place of perfect people. My philosophy is that anyone can come through those doors and I am going to do my best to encourage you to become better," said Osteen.
