Conservative anger growing over Obamacare decision

I ran into a prominent conservative member of Congress Friday night just before the huge storms moved through Washington.  He was, he said, far angrier on the day after the Supreme Court Obamacare decision than he had been the moment he learned Chief Justice John Roberts had joined the Court’s liberal bloc to uphold the individual mandate at the heart of Obamacare.  He didn’t resort to histrionics or profanity, but he was spitting mad — and his anger was growing, not diminishing.

A short time later, I saw another conservative lawmaker who said much the same thing.  And yet another conservative leader who was in the same frame of mind.

The Supreme Court decision made it official -- the health care mandate is a tax. That is a characterization one Senator says would have doomed its passage had it been known at the time.

"There would not have been ten votes for the legislation," South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham said. "Nobody would have wanted to have gone home and say, 'I just increased your taxes by billions of dollars over the next 10 years to fix health care.'"

Those contemptuous epithets and more were hurled by Republicans and conservatives at Supreme Court Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. moments after he single-handedly saved Obamacare, joining liberals on the bench to break a 4-4 tie.

The Supreme Court has abandoned us,” Texas Gov. Rick Perry declared. “Simply disappointing,” Florida Gov. Rick Scott moaned. “Activist court,” Rep. Michele Bachmann cried.
