Be Skeptical of Pharmaceutical Company Claims

Ben Goldacre's TEDTalk describes the selective bias in research and publishing which strongly favors articles with positive outcomes. In my field of psychiatry, this bias is only the tip of the iceberg. In many cases, the articles are not even written by the scientists whose names appear on them. They are "ghostwritten" by drug company minions.
In my role as a medical expert in product liability lawsuits against drug companies, judges have empowered me to dig into the otherwise secret interiors of drug company data vaults...

Published articles about psychiatric drugs frequently fail to reflect the actual results of the study. After the FDA rejected an antidepressant clinical trial for failing to demonstrate effectiveness, the pharmaceutical company authored a paper based on the same study that was manipulated to show a positive outcome.

he Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office on Friday released the results of its investigation into a murder-suicide about two months ago outside Murphys, concluding Philip Marshall acted alone in killing his two teenaged children, a pet Shih Tzu and himself after a history of mental illness and a messy split with the children’s mother.

... Philip Marshall’s toxicology screen showed the painkillers hydrocodone and morphine in his blood as well as hydroxybupropion, a derivative of the antidepressant bupropion, commonly sold as Wellbutrin.

Investigators looked at Marshall’s medical records and determined he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

The maker of Zoloft is being sued in an unusual case alleging the popular antidepressant has no more benefit than a dummy pill and that patients who took it should be reimbursed for their costs.

Zoloft's maker, Pfizer Inc., the world's biggest drugmaker by revenue, disputes the claim,

Not so, according to plaintiff Laura A. Plumlee, who says Zoloft didn't help her during three years of treatment. Her attorney, R. Brent Wisner of the Los Angeles firm Baum Hedlund Aristei Goldman, argues the Food and Drug Administration shouldn't have approved Zoloft because Pfizer didn't publish some clinical studies that found the drug about as effective as a placebo.

Indeed, "the popular antidepressant has no more benefit than a dummy pill".

Then I couldn't resist this from THE DAILY BEAST of all places. "Hence the moral dilemma. The placebo effect—that is, a medical benefit you get from an inert pill or other sham treatment—rests on the holy trinity of belief, expectation, and hope. But telling someone with depression who is being helped by antidepressants, or who (like my friend) hopes to be helped, threatens to topple the whole house of cards. Explain that it's all in their heads, that the reason they're benefiting is the same reason why Disney's Dumbo could initially fly only with a feather clutched in his trunk—believing makes it so—and the magic dissipates like fairy dust in a windstorm."

Just like the doctor tells you, "this will make you feel better" well we're not really sure of that.

It's the drugs, prescription drugs! The antidepressant meds is the thread that runs throughout all these stories.

We'll wait again for the coroner's results that James Holmes, the killer, was on Antidepressants. He was the shooter ... but we wait to see if the drug was the trigger.

Have you noticed in all of the celebrity's that have died suddenly, Anna Nicole, her son, Heath Ledger, Michael Jackson, had antidepressants in the coronary reports.

I have been able to predict this every time these news stories play out.

There is a killer among us and for many he's within us ... those who have been prescribed antidepressants do not realize that the demons are in your brain, playing with and altering the serotonin.

The young people that we have misled and forced to take these meds some have become high school shooters.
