Gary Greenberg: "Manufacturing Depression: The Secret History of a Modern Disease"

Gary Greenberg: "Manufacturing Depression: The Secret History of a Modern Disease"

Is depression manufactured? Two decades after the introduction of antidepressants, it’s become commonplace to assume that our sadness can be explained in terms of a disease called depression.

AMY GOODMAN: What role do pharmaceutical companies play in this?
GARY GREENBERG: Well, pharmaceutical companies have been very eager to jump on that bandwagon. In fact, in many respects, they’ve originated that idea, or at least spread it through the culture like a virus. Since about 1960, the drug industry has been actively engaged in trying to help first doctors and now patients come — believe that demoralization is really a mental illness. (Transript of the video)

DEMOCRACY NOW!

TONY DIGIROLAMO- THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE THAT I PART COMPANY WITH MY CONSERVATIVE FRIENDS WHO SIDE WITH THE DRUG COMPANIES AND HAVE BECOME DRUG LORDS FOR THE PHARMACUETICALS.

With every passing day someone makes my case and one of my reasons for being.

Gary Greenberg intrerview was just on Fox News with John Stossel (Don't miss it) and he blew me away telling us about the myth of the so called "chemical imbalance" and he said if there is a chemical imbalance they certainl don't what chemicals they are.

His words warm the bottom of my heart.

Democracy Now! is broadcast on Pacifica, NPR, community, and college radio stations; on public access, PBS, and frankly... I know folks, I'm always a hot 180 degrees away in my views on everything they air. But right to be pointing this out even beyond big pharma being a capitalistic monster... To the mistake of calling depression a mental illness. Not too many people doing that.
