PASTORS UNITE AGAINST IRS TAX CODE RESTRICTIONS ON POLITICAL SPEECH IN THE PULPIT

PASTORS UNITE AGAINST IRS TAX CODE RESTRICTIONS ON POLITICAL SPEECH IN THE PULPIT

Are American pastors free to share their political views from the pulpit? The answer to this question is complex. While some issues can certainly be discussed, there are also government-sanctioned limitations on partisan preaching (especially if churches expect to keep their tax-exempt status).

The fear and uncertainty that some faith leaders experience is driven by the aforementioned ban on political campaign activity that was instituted on both charities and churches, alike, nearly 60 years ago. It was back in 1954 that Congress approved of what has become known as the “Johnson Amendment.” The provision, which still stands today, explicitly prohibits 501(c)(3) organizations (churches and charities) from engaging in campaign activity.

THE BLAZE

TONY DIGIROLAMO- The IRS in 1947 gave Christians the answer to this question and told the church and pastors that they shall not speak on politics. and in 1954 Sen Lyndon Johnson added to the rule passing a bill saying they shall not endorse candidates period or lose the tax exemption status. And the pastors and priest did not speak and the pulpit was silenced for decades. That is coming to an end. There has never been a church that went to court nor lost their 501c status, none. Law suites never pursued because they know the ruling is unconstitutional and right of free speech. This year that understanding is being realized more now than ever before. Tell your pastors and priests this year to find those men and women that support biblical principles and work hard to get them elected. Tell they have FREEDOOOOOMMMM!!!
